This is Spain's highest viewed TV show and I owe my good grades in modern Spanish history to watching this. It is currently in its 18th season. It shows the daily life of a family in Madrid in the years leading up to Franco's death and then the transition period. Everything you see on their television is always real footage. You will need a VPN blocker to access this. I use VPN Ninja which costs six dollars a month but is definitely worth the price.
Chef's Table, Francis Mallmann: Netflix

This episode of Chef's Table is pure magic. It is primarily done in English but it does a beautiful job capturing the complexity and diversity of Argentinian food and one of Argentina's most famous chefs. This is my go to sub lesson plan.
Relatos Salvajes

This movie is comprised of vignettes all of which are dark and focus on revenge. The first one will make your jaw drop and you will be on the edge of your seat until the very end. I found this at my local library.
Eva: Netflix

This movie explores the moral and ethical dilemmas we will most likely face as artificial intelligence becomes part of our reality. This movie has lots of twists and I definitely was not expecting the ending or the uncertainty it made me feel. This is a great addition to any technology unit.
Landfill Harmonic: Vimeo

This documentary will pull at your heartstrings from beginning to end. It's a triumph.
"No tener nada, no es excusa para no hacer nada."

Movie Worksheet: Used in my intermediate unit La vivienda y las comunidades
Club de Cuervos: Netflix

You will not improve your academic Spanish by watching this but, you will certainly learn to sound bien chido. I was hesitant to watch at first, but I am glad I did. Definitely a fun show, though in no way for use in class.
Instructions Not Included: Netflix

A drama comedy that takes place in California. It's funny, cute and sad. I used this film in a unit on family and relationships. This is better with older students as there is some language and some sexual references.
Living Is Easy With Eyes Closed: Amazon

An endearing story of a teacher and a coming of age story for the two younger protagonists. Heartwarming.
Infancia Clandestina

Based on a true story this movie follows part of Ernesto's childhood growing up in Argentina. It is full of both innocence and danger caused by his parents' political involvement.
States Of Undress: Venezuela
This whole series is simply amazing and novel, seriously watch them all. Hailey Gates explores politics through fashion in each episode. The complete episode can be found on Viceland's website. I show the majority of this episode in the unit on beauty. This one episode hits on so many AP Themes, I don't even mind that it is mostly in English.
Who is Dayani Cristal: Netflix

A moving documentary that looks at what happens to the immigrants that die trying to cross our border. It is moving and enraging.
Un Tango Más: Netflix

A documentary about Argentina's most famous Tango duo and couple. It follows their relationship and career. I plan to use this in a future unit on Machismo and relationships.
Huicholes: Vimeo

Brimstone and Glory: Amazon
A documentary about Tultepec's annual fireworks festival. This would be great in a unit about identity, community or holidays. Anthony Bourdain said it best when he called Mexico "painfully beautiful" and that describes this festival perfectly.
I use this documentary with my juniors during our unit on Identity. Check out my movie worksheet.
